Kickstarting the Decade for Implementation Leading the World by Example
Updated: Dec 9, 2022
This week sees global leaders from more than 190 countries gather virtually for the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 75) together with representatives from the private sector and civil society in what has been a very different year for everyone and that extends to everyone, everywhere. From the way we now work to the way we interact. And what a different way of doing things has highlighted, is that we’re able to become closer, build new relationships and widen the conversations we’re having. And that’s why we’re bringing people together, because we know that there’s a lot more to say, share and do so we can act in achieving the World we want to live in. The goal: to discuss global political challenges and possible joint solutions as we step into the Decade for Action.

Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals
Today, progress is being made in many places, but, overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. 2020 was meant to usher in a decade of ambitious action to deliver the Goals by 2030 and then Covid happened.
The Decade of Action called for accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world’s biggest challenges — ranging from poverty and gender to climate change, inequality and closing the finance gap.
When the UN Secretary-General called on all business leaders earlier this year and extended that to all sectors of society to mobilize for a decade of action on three levels: global action, local action and people action, to generate an unstoppable movement pushing for the required transformations, Athalos CEO and Founder Martijn van der Ven responded by committing to doing something about issues such as unequal access & exclusion around communications AND reducing inequalities and delivering on people action. In bringing like-minded, like hearted people on the Doing Good journey to serve as Champions for the UN’s SDGs, Role Models that lead by example, inspire, motivate and activate others.
“We started 2020 as the Decade of change with a very different view of the actions we’ll need to take and how we’d jointly address the challenges of the World around us. The World around us may be very different 6 months on, but the sentiment in tackling these challenges from Food Poverty to Climate Action is very much alive. We’ve seen that from the growing number of campaigns and fundraisers people are hosting to the support businesses have been providing for their people and doing their part as best that they can. And we’re seeing that there’s a renewed vigour in doing good, a sense of collective responsibility now more than ever and that’s a great springboard for the SDGs” commented Martijn Van der Ven, CEO, Athalos
“and during this strange year, we’ve listened better and engaged better and through our observations as we’ve engaged with our peers and beyond our traditional stakeholders that there’s an inherent Doing Good mindset that’s very apparent across nations, business, organisations and now, people. And it just made sense that we should move this will to Do Good into a movement of Doing Good People who act as our current & next generation Role Models & Activists activating SDGs in their lives, business & motivating others. This is where we now deliver on the UN Secretary General’s call to action. So we brought people from all walks of life together, to unite on how we can motivate (individually and collectively) others and how this movement of Global Ambassadors doing good can become a Springboard for what happens next”.
